The Makana Municipality’s Naming Task Team has now announced a “public consultation process” which will be launched with an indaba in the City Hall on Saturday 1 March 2008 from 10am-1pm.

According to the announcement, the indaba is “designed to kick off a month of consultation and debate” and educational materials are going to be provided in both DVD and print formats. Public meetings are also to be held in each of the 12 wards. The Makana Municipality will then assess all inputs both in writing and from the public meetings and will then make a recommendation to the Provincial Geographical Names Committee.

Although the handling of the matter to date makes us sceptical about the purpose of this “public consultation process” – we think it’s probably more to do with indoctrination than education – we would be glad to be proved wrong and we have agreed to contribute to the DVD to ensure that the many opinions as expressed through the KGG are given exposure.

We’ve been given a four minute slot and will use the opportunity to best advantage.

The indaba on 1 March is probably going to be used as an occasion for a “show of force” by those pushing for the name change and we may well be outnumbered but we need to have a presence there so please, if you can, make every effort to attend. We are also going to have to ensure that we are represented at the various Ward meetings.

Thank you for your continued interest. Please keep spreading the word to those who may wish to have a say.
